Philippe Bertinchamps is a journalist, editor and project coordinator with nearly two decades of professional experience focused on the Balkans and the intersection of media, civil society, culture and public affairs. Based in Belgrade, Serbia, he has developed extensive expertise in political and social reporting, editorial leadership, journalist training, project management, institutional partnerships and cultural cooperation. His work combines strong journalistic practice with an established understanding of the region’s complex political, social and cultural environment.
Since 2012, Philippe has served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Le Courrier des Balkans, where he is involved in editorial coordination and team management, while also contributing to journalist training and mentoring. His responsibilities extend beyond editorial work to fundraising, institutional partnership development, cultural event organisation and the management of international projects. This combination of editorial, managerial and partnership-building experience has enabled him to work effectively across professional and institutional environments and to connect journalism and public-interest initiatives with wider civil-society and cultural networks.
Alongside his editorial responsibilities, Philippe has worked as an independent journalist and correspondent covering the Balkans since 2007. His reporting and analysis have appeared in a wide range of respected French and European media, including Libération, Mediapart, Tribune de Genève, Le Soir, L’Équipe, L’Humanité Dimanche, Réforme, Politique Internationale, Causette, Vreme, RFI, RTBF and BFMTV. This broad portfolio reflects his ability to address political, social, cultural and regional issues for diverse audiences and media platforms.
Philippe has also made a significant contribution to the documentation and understanding of Balkan societies through editorial and publishing projects. His selected publications include Belgrade in Odyssée Balkans (ENS Éditions, 2024), as well as editorial coordination of Roma of the Balkans: Integration, Citizenship and Democracy (2013), Staro Sajmište: A Concentration Camp in Serbia (2012), and Small Peoples and Minorities of the Balkans (2008). He also coordinated the translation of Stripovi: Contemporary Independent Comics in Serbia and Croatia (2009). These works demonstrate a sustained interest in minorities, citizenship, memory, cultural identity and contemporary Balkan societies.
His professional profile is complemented by an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma (DEA) in Philosophy from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, obtained in 2000. Philippe works in French as his native language, has fluent English, and possesses professional working proficiency in Serbian/Croatian. Earlier in his career, he worked as a French-as-a-Foreign-Language and Social Sciences teacher, adding an educational and mentoring dimension to his subsequent journalistic and project-based work.
Overall, Philippe brings together regional knowledge, journalistic credibility, editorial leadership, cultural engagement and international project experience. His long-standing presence in the Balkans and his work with media, civil society and cultural actors position him as a valuable professional for initiatives requiring informed regional analysis, public communication, partnership development, journalist capacity-building and engagement with diverse communities across the Balkans.
